Your VW Golf DSG Automatic questions answered.
The VW Golf DSG gearbox is recognised as one of the best automatic gearboxes on the market. The DSG gearbox works differently from a conventional automatic gearbox. It operates with two electronically controlled shafts which manage gear selection. When you select drive, one shaft selects first gear while the second puts the next gear on standby. As the gearbox changes to second the original shaft puts third gear on standby creating seamless gear changes. Not only are the gear changes silky smooth but are also fast taking less than 4/100ths of a second.
Thanks to the dual clutch design the DSG gearbox is more efficient than a conventional gearbox. This efficiency together with its low weight and intelligent control means that DSG can achieve the same and in many instances better fuel consumption than a manual gearbox.
The VW Golf 1.4 TSi 122 PS DSG and the 1.6 TDi 105 PS are a 7 speed DSG and the 2.0 TDi 150 PS is a 6 speed DSG due to the torque of the engine.
